"It is said that Adam and Eve were the first man and woman, but the presence of the serpent in the Garden of Eden indicates that other beings were there prior to this time. According to tradition, these creatures had quite a history already. They belonged to an angelic hierarchy which had been sent to earth to participate in its formation. Having finished their work, some of them did not want to return to God and believed they could exist independently of him. Free to stay or return, they chose to stay. So those we call the rebel angels made the mistake of choosing not to reintegrate into the divine Source, but to live an independent existence. In separating and distancing themselves, they became demons. They retained their science, their knowledge, but of their own free will they lost contact with divine love. These creatures formed an egregor,* symbolized by the serpent coiled around the trunk of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil." Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov
