"Within the family and within society, every one must carry out tasks and play roles, conscious of their responsibilities. But at the same time, they must never forget that everything in this world passes, and these roles are only exercises that cosmic Intelligence has provided for humans as a stimulus for them to perfect themselves. In this sense, you can say the earth is both a school and a stage at the same time. We must apply ourselves to our ‘exercises’ and do them as well as we can but, on the other hand, not take our role too seriously, in other words, not cling to it as though nothing more important existed and this situation was going to last forever.
What would people say of an actor who continued to act like King Lear, Napoleon or Sheherazade after he had left the stage? Well, that is what humans tend to do, especially those who have honorary positions: they identify with their task, they forget they are on the scene for very little time. But initiates never forget. They are conscious that their passage on earth and the role they have to play there are of a fleeting nature. That is why they always act with lucidity, moderation and disinterestedness."Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov
