Slavery : obedience with lower nature is a slavery
|
|
"Each time someone obeys an inferior desire in himself, he shackles himself and becomes a slave, and this explains why we find so many slaves on earth. Although human beings appear to be free, the truth is that inwardly they faithfully obey a master – their lower nature – which exploits them pitilessly. When they have succumbed, they try to justify themselves, saying: ‘It was too much for me.’ From the moment they utter this phrase, they are slaves, because there is someone else inside who has taken control and who is holding the reins tight. A free man never says: ‘It was too much for me’, because these are words of capitulation, a visiting card on which is written: ‘I am weak, I am ignorant.’ Even if the card says someone is president of this, director of that, or inspector – a wise man reads something completely different."
